An industrialist took responsibility for the treatment of Shahadat, a child suffering from progeria in Chittagong’s Mirsrai, after the newspaper Naya Digante published the headline ‘A 10-year-old child with a rare disease is like a 60-year-old man’ on October 7.
On Sunday (November 12), Shahadat was admitted to the endocrinology ward of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka.
Mirsarai Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Mahfuza Zerin confirmed the admission.
Mahfuza Zerin said, ‘The treatment of Shahadat has started. They left home for Bangabandhu Medical University in Dhaka on Saturday. He was admitted to the endocrinology ward of the children’s department of the hospital on Sunday morning. The treatment will start from Monday.’
He said, ‘Seeing the news of martyrdom, I rushed to that house. After discussing various issues with his family, we took the initiative to build a house for them to live in. House construction is going on in government shelter project in Mayani union of upazila.
He also said that an industrialist of Dhaka has taken responsibility for the treatment of child martyrs. But he does not want to reveal his identity. Basically he took Shahadat along with his mother and father to Dhaka for treatment and arranged a rented house next to the hospital for them to stay.
Shahadat’s father Md Hanif said on mobile phone, ‘I am in the hospital with the boy and his mother. The man who took charge of Shahadat’s treatment was in the hospital from morning till noon. But did not identify his name.’
Md. Hanif thanked the journalist.
Md. Shahadat Hossain (10) was diagnosed with progeria four months after birth. He is the youngest son of three children of Md. Hanif and Nachima Akhter of Maizgaon village of Ward No. 3 of Wahedpur Union of Upazila. Shahadat is a second class student of Mirzabazar Government Primary School.
