The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has fixed November 19 to hear the party’s appeal against the High Court’s verdict canceling the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami in the Election Commission.

On the same day, two separate contempt petitions against Jamaat-e-Islami will be heard. In the last writ application, the Appellate Division has applied for a ban on any kind of political activities including gatherings, processions using Jamaat’s name or banner.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan fixed this day of hearing on Sunday.

The Supreme Court fixed a new date for the hearing when Jamaat chief counsel AJ Mohammad Ali applied to postpone the hearing for eight weeks citing personal problems.

Before this, on August 1, 2013, another writ was filed against the decision of the High Court canceling the registration of Jamaat in the Election Commission.

Bangladesh Tariqat Federation Secretary General Rezaul Haque Chandpuri along with two others applied for a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami not being able to claim the party as a legitimate political party until the leave-to-appeal is settled on June 26.

On the same day, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman and two others, including Chandpuri, filed a contempt of court petition for holding a public meeting as a political party despite the appeal being settled.

Some senior government officials were also charged with contempt of court for allowing Jamaat-e-Islami to hold its program in Dhaka.
