Australian leg spinner Adam Zampa is having a dream with the ball in the ongoing World Cup. He is the highest wicket taker of the tournament so far (22). Among them, Zampa broke the records of two compatriot bowlers Shane Warne and Brad Hogg by taking two wickets against Bangladesh yesterday. He is currently the highest wicket-taker by an Australian spinner at a World Cup stage. It goes without saying that the number will increase.
Zampa recorded the highest 22-wicket haul in a World Cup by dismissing Tiger opener Liton Das on Saturday. Former Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker among Australian bowlers in a World Cup.
Yesterday, Australia confirmed the ticket to the semis before taking to the field in their last match of the first phase of the World Cup. After that, face to face with Bangladesh, who were knocked out of the World Cup. This Aussie leg spinner made such a feat by dismissing Bangladesh team opener Liton Das in that match. Zampa is currently the top wicket taker in the ongoing World Cup with 22 wickets.
Yesterday in the 17th over of the first innings, he dismissed the opener Liton Das and shared Hogg’s record. He then dismissed Hogg in the 43rd over, dismissing Mushfiqur Rahim. Zampa is now behind Muttiah Muralitharan in the list of spinners with most wickets in a single World Cup edition. The Sri Lankan legend took 23 wickets in 2007. Besides, Hogg is third after Jumper. He took 21 wickets in 2007. Besides, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi (21 in 2011) is also with him. And next is Shane Warne (20 in 1999).
Australia did not make much of an advantage at the start of the World Cup and so did Zampa. Zampa was wicketless in the first match of the seven-wicket defeat against India in Chennai. He scored 70 runs in their second match against South Africa when they met for 1 wicket. Took four wickets against Sri Lanka. This augi spinner took 3 wickets in the next four matches.
Talking about the jumper’s form, Australia’s spin bowling coach Daniel Vettori said, ‘I think his control over his length was the best I’ve seen in a while, especially in the three matches where he took four wickets in a row and then against England. We all know his skills and versatility.’
