Russian Navy ship Pacific Fleet Squadron visited Bangladesh’s Chittagong port. After 50 years, a ship of the Russian Navy visited Bangladesh.
On Sunday (November 12), the Russian Embassy in Dhaka announced this information in a message on their social media X-A (formerly Twitter). However, it was not mentioned when the ship entered Bangladesh.
Posting three photos of the Pacific Fleet Squadron in Chittagong Port, the Embassy said that the Russian Pacific Fleet Squadron is visiting Chittagong Port. Which is a huge milestone for Russia-Bangladesh relations. It was 50 years ago that a naval ship of the Soviet Union (now Russia) last visited the port of Bangladesh.
According to a BBC Bengali report, a delegation of the Soviet Navy arrived in Bangladesh on March 21, 1972. A special task force of 1,000 sailors led by Vice Admiral Sergei Yuenko began mine clearance. 24 ships of the country participated in that operation. The then Soviet forces began removing mines from the Bay of Bengal in April. Although the task force had uncovered a shipping channel by July, it took the special task force until June 1974 to complete the task of removing mines and sunken ships.
