Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that Bangladesh is showing that leprosy can be eradicated. The government will work with drug manufacturers to distribute free drugs to lepers. Lepers are part of the society, so are the disabled. So are people of the third gender. They must be included in society; added the Prime Minister.
He said these things at the Second National Leprosy Conference-2023 in a hotel in the capital on Sunday morning.
The Prime Minister said that Bangladesh is lagging behind in research in medical science, and importance should be given to this. Diseases related to climate change should also be kept in mind.
The work of eradicating leprosy will be accelerated through this kind of conference, the prime minister said, prevention is the most important in the case of leprosy. Bangladesh has come out of the superstition about leprosy. Implementation of Smart Bangladesh is not possible until it is completely out.
Calling upon the concerned to ensure the treatment of leprosy patients along with general patients in all district and upazila hospitals, the head of government said that the specialized sub-hospitals built for the treatment of complications of leprosy are being modernized.
At the same time, the Prime Minister called on all concerned to take all kinds of initiatives including increasing funds to accelerate the national leprosy program to achieve ‘Efforts to ZERO Leprosy by 2030’.
Apart from this, the Prime Minister also called upon the domestic pharmaceutical companies to manufacture specialized medicines for leprosy and distribute them to the patients free of charge.
He said, not neglect, let’s bring leprosy people into the mainstream of society with love, compassion and affection, make their lives meaningful and joyful.
The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s firm commitment to eradicate leprosy from Bangladesh by 2030.
The Prime Minister said that for the development of private hospitals in our country, the tax on all the equipment of the private hospital, especially the tax for the treatment of children, should be completely zero. We encourage them to create private entrepreneurs. We provide all kinds of facilities for them. For which private hospitals have been built all over Bangladesh.
He said, we have already eradicated polio. Reduced maternal and child mortality. We have achieved unprecedented success in vaccination. Immunization programs have been praised all over the world. Many developed countries are struggling to deal with covid-19, we have made everything free of charge by taking proper swift action. We have achieved considerable success there.
Sheikh Hasina said, my father struggled all his life to change the fate of people in Bangladesh. Through that struggle we can build ourselves as an independent nation. Fulfilling his dream is my only goal.
Sheikh Hasina said, we were in power from 1996 to 2001. I took the plan to do 18 thousand community clinics. We build about 10,000 clinics, out of which 4,000 are operational. Its success rate is about 70% within a year. There is a huge response among people. Because medicine is given there without money. Unfortunately, the Awami League could not come to power in the October 2001 elections. Then BNP came to power. Khaleda Zia, who became Prime Minister, immediately closed the community clinic. Deprives people of healthcare. This is our misfortune.
