Chittagong: The court sent Tania Sultana Prakash Koli Akhter (19) to jail in a case under the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act in connection with the death of retired ACC officer Syed Mohammad Shahidullah in police custody at Chandgaon police station in the city.

The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam gave this order on Thursday (November 9).

Chittagong Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Nazir Abul Kalam Azad told Banglanews that Tania Sultana Prakash Koli Akhtar appeared in the court and applied for bail in the case filed by Fauzia Anwar’s wife, Chandangao Police Station, in the death of retired ACC officer Syed Mohammad Shahidullah. After hearing both sides, the court denied bail and ordered to send him to prison.

According to court sources, on October 16, Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Dr. Fauzia Anwar, the victim’s wife, filed a case against 9 people including the officer-in-charge (OC), inspector (investigation) and ASI of the police station in the case of the death of retired ACC officer Syed Mohammad Shahidullah in police custody at Chandgaon police station in the city. The court directed to record the case at the police station. Besides, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has ordered the Chittagong Metro Unit to investigate. Fauzia Anwar filed the case in Chandangao police station on October 18.

The defendants in the case are Chandgaon police officer-in-charge (OC). Khairul Islam, Inspector (Investigation) Md. Mobinur Rahman, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Chandgaon Police Station. Yusuf, ASI Sohel Rana, Police Inspector (Investigation) Md. Mobinul Haque, SM Asaduzzaman (52), a resident of Chandgaon Thana area, Md. Jasim Uddim (37), Md. Liton (48), Roni Akhtar Tania (26) and Koli Akhtar (19).

The victim Syed Mohammad Shahidullah retired from the post of Deputy Director (DD) of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2018, the prosecution said. He lived within one kilometer of Chandgaon police station in the city. On August 29, Rony Akhtar Tania filed a lawsuit against Syed Mohammad Shahidullah and his brother-in-law Mohammad Qaiser Anwar due to his dispute with some local people over the land there. After the hearing of the case, the judge of the court took cognizance of the crime and issued summons against the two accused. Harun Or Rashid, Assistant Bench of the concerned court, disappeared. As a result, the accused were not summoned to appear in court. Then the court gave the next date of the case. As the plaintiff did not appear on that date, his lawyer applied for time. But on the same day, the court issued a warrant against the two accused. Then on the night of October 3, Shahidullah was arrested from his home by the Chandgaon police station of the city by showing a court warrant. After being taken to the police station, they tortured the victim Shahidullah in connivance. At one point, Syed Mohammad Shahidullah died within a few hours.
