Chhatra Dal leader arrested in police station after ‘interrogation’ of Chhatra League in DU campus

DU Chhatra Dal Joint General Secretary Farhan Arif faced the ‘interrogation’ of the Chhatra League leaders and activists on the Dhaka University (DU) campus. Later he was arrested after he was handed over to Shahbagh police station through the proctorial team. He is a student of Peace and Conflict Department of Dhaka University for the 2010-11 session and is currently studying in the Department’s Professional Masters Course.

This incident happened on Tuesday (November 7) evening. An eyewitness present at the scene told Samakal, Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall and Dr. saw Farhan Arif walking with a young woman in Curzon Hall area. Muhammad Shahidullah, a BCL leader recognized him as a BCL leader and started the interrogation and informed the BCL leaders. All of them are followers of DU Chhatra League General Secretary Tanveer Hasan Saikat. Later, when Farhan Arif behaved ‘rudely’, a BCL leader slapped him. Later his phone was checked and he was handed over to the Proctoral team. The proctor handed him over to Shahbagh police station.

When asked about this, Tanveer Hasan Saikat told Samakal, ‘They along with some women may have been planning something in the Curzon area. Later, when we saw our students trying to run away, the students caught them and questioned them. They have a cycle. Later they were handed over to the Proctoral team.’

Proctor Professor Dr. Md. Maksudur Rahman said, ‘Students were complaining that Farhan Arif was involved in various incidents that happened recently. Later he was handed over to the police.’

On this side, OC of Ramna police station Abul Hasan told Samakal, “A person named Farhan Arif has been arrested by Shahbag police station. There is a case of arson against him in Ramna police station. He will be handed over to us here.’

The duty officer of Ramna Police Station Sub-Inspector Abdur Rahman confirmed his arrest and said, ‘Arif was brought to Ramna Police Station from Shahbagh Police Station after his arrest. He will be shown arrested in an old case.’

General Secretary of DU Chhatra Dal Ariful Islam said, ‘DU Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Hall branch took Farhan Arif to the hall. From there, the leaders and activists of BCL handed over to Shahbag police. He was transferred from Shahbag police station and sent to Ramna police station. He demanded immediate release of Farhan Arif.
