Kurigram Roads and Public Ways Department has announced to stop traffic through Sonahat bridge of Bhurungamari upazila for the next two weeks.

According to the sources of Kurigram Roads and Public Roads Department, this decision has been taken to repair the bridge. Traffic on the bridge will be closed from 7 pm to 7 am till November 20. This directive will be implemented from the evening of Tuesday, November 7.

The footing of Sonahat Bridge built during the British period on the Dudhkumar river in Bhurungamari has been broken, the iron footing has been exposed. People and vehicles are moving through this dangerous bridge for the sake of livelihood.

Abdur Razzak, General Secretary of Sonahat Land Port Import and Export Association, said that the traffic pressure on the old bridge has increased due to the suspension of the construction work of the new bridge. The bridge had earlier been closed to traffic for repairs. Traders are affected if the traffic is stopped through the bridge.

Nazrul Islam, Executive Engineer of Kurigram Roads and Public Ways Department, said that repair work will continue to avoid accidents on the dangerous Sonahat bridge. It has been decided to stop traffic from 7 pm to 7 am every day during the repair. It will take about two weeks to complete the repair.
