
Journalists can play an important role in safeguarding the continuity of parliamentary democracy: Speaker
Dhaka, November 7, 2023 (BSS): Speaker of Bangladesh National Parliament Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said that the Bangladesh National Parliament has a rich history of moving forward. Pointing out that parliamentary democracy is progressing through many ups and downs, he said that journalists can play an important role in maintaining the continuity of parliamentary democracy by being loyal to the constitution. The speaker said these things in the chief guest speech at the publication ceremony of the book titled ‘Parliament Journal’ published by Bangladesh Parliament Journalist Association (BPJA) at LD Hall of Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan on Tuesday. He unveiled the cover of the book.
Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said that the relationship of the National Parliament with the Bangladesh Parliament Journalists Association is very close. Parliamentary journalism is a special type, which journalists of Jatiya Sangsad beat have been practicing with sincerity. He said that ‘Parliament Journal’ published by BPJA will play an important role in parliamentary journalism.
President of Parliament Journalists Association Haroon Or Rashid presided over the event and Vice President Mashiur Rahman moderated the event, among others, Association General Secretary Nafiza Daula, Parliament Journal Editor Kamran Reza, Senior Journalists Sajal Zahid, Haroon Jamil, Zahid Chowdhury, Mostafa Kamal, founding members of BPJA. Senior Journalist Mufti Ahmed and Joint Secretary Public Relations Department Tariq Mahmood spoke.
Speaker said, this publication of Parliament Journal is a constructive publication on the occasion of 50 years of Jatiya Sangsad from 1973 to 2023. The journal, which publishes thematic writings from prominent public figures, covers topics ranging from legislative procedure to parliamentary democracy. He said, this journal can be a good source for research and reference on parliamentary affairs. Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said, BPJA can take the initiative of publishing research based on various subjects. He also focuses on publications on sustainable development, subject-based democracy, fundamental rights and human rights.
The Speaker said that the Constitution is a living document. The constitution of this country was not imported from any foreign country. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took initiative in drafting the constitution the day after his return home. At this time, he requested everyone to read the speech given by Bangabandhu in the Constituent Assembly in 1972. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Parliament, the Speaker expressed his sincere thanks to all those involved in publishing the ‘Parliament Journal’ on behalf of the Bangladesh Parliament Journalists Association and organizing its publication event.
Secretary of Parliament Journalists Association Jasmin Molly, Executive Committee members Emran Hossain Sheikh and Mizan Rahman and related senior officials of the Parliament Secretariat were present at the time.
