In Konabari of Gazipur, the workers of some factories have started a movement demanding salary increase. On Tuesday (November 7) morning, they blocked the bus stand area of the Dhaka-Tangail highway and the Konabari-Kashimpur regional road. Besides, there are allegations that two buses were set on fire.
According to local sources, the workers left the workplace and stayed on the road around 8 am. Meanwhile, they started raising slogans demanding salary increase. Gazipur Shilpa Police, Thana Police lathi-charged them after receiving the information. At that time police-workers clashed. Some workers were injured. Later, the angry workers vandalized several buses and set fire to two buses.
The workers said that they have been agitating since October 23 demanding that their salary be at least 23,000 taka. The government and the owners are arresting, harassing and torturing them without giving any importance to their movement. The owner is making a farce in the name of salary increase.
Konabari Metro Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) KM Ashraf Uddin said that workers set fire to two passenger buses of Ajmeri Paribahan at the Konabari signboard area on the Dhaka-Tangail highway around 10:30 am. Fire service personnel brought the fire under control. When the workers tried to block the highway, they were baton-charged and removed.
Yasin Arafat Hossain, the captain of RAB-1, said that someone from the third party is inciting the workers to block and vandalize the highway. Traffic is normal now. Our members are patrolling.
