The government has decided to raise the minimum wage of the workers of the garment industry by 12,500 rupees, which will be effective from December 1. This decision was taken in the 6th meeting of the Minimum Wage Board formed to increase wages.
Minister of State for Labor Mannujan Sufian announced this in a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday (November 7).
He said, we are announcing the minimum wages of ready-made garment workers on the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Their minimum wages will increase by 56.25. As a result, the minimum wage will be increased from Tk 8 thousand to Tk 12 thousand 500. Besides, there will be 5 percent annual increment for them. Moreover, the pay structure has been reduced from 7 to 5.

Earlier at 12:30 PM, the owner proposed a minimum wage of Tk 12,500 for the workers at the wage board meeting at Segunbagicha in the capital. Sirajul Islam Roni, president of Jatiya Garments Sramik-Karmachari League, represented the workers. Siddiqur Rahman, former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and chairman of Sterling Group, represented the owners.
After the meeting, Siddiqur Rahman said that wages will be implemented from January next year. That is, the new salary structure will be implemented from December.
