The age of the match was then 24.2 overs. The Bangladesh camp was buoyed by the wicket of settled Sadira Samarawickrama. Just then, world cricket witnessed a different phenomenon. International cricket was seen for the first time in the match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
In 24.2 overs, the new batsman Angelo Mathews, who came to the wicket after Sadira, fell into the timed out trap. Many may have questions about ‘timed out’. Let’s answer that question. Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka entered the field as the sixth batsman against Bangladesh. But he had to return to the dressing room without playing any ball.
Because, according to the rules of ICC Clause 16.2, the next batter has to take a strike within 2 minutes after a batter is out. Matthews didn’t do that and got into some trouble with his helmet. He was saying something about his helmet. Two minutes passed by.
Umpire Maraiz Erasmus responded to Bangladesh’s request for a time-out. Mathews argued for a while after getting out, but to no avail. He had to return to the dressing room without playing any ball. After returning, the Lankan batsman threw his helmet in front of the dressing room.
In the commentary, former cricketer and commentator Russell Arnold said that Mathews was the first batsman to be timed out in international cricket. In other words, the world cricket witnessed a rare event in the match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. And Mathews himself became the first cricketer to be timed out in international cricket.
Sri Lanka had 135 runs on the scoreboard when Mathews got out. 5 batters were out. Although bowler Shakib Al Hasan was present when Mathews was dismissed, the wicket was counted as a timed out.
