Israel steps up attacks on Gaza despite calls for ceasefire
Gaza Strip, Palestine, November 6, 2023 (Bass Desk): Israel on Monday launched a massive attack on besieged Gaza, hitting Hamas fighters in defiance of a cease-fire call by the heads of various UN aid agencies. The heads of various UN agencies condemned the indiscriminate killing of civilians during the month-long rampage in Gaza.
Israeli troops and Palestinian Hamas fighters are conducting house-to-house attacks in densely populated Gaza. 1.5 million people displaced by the war in various parts of Gaza have fled to other parts of the continent to save their lives.
Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus told CNN, “We are hitting Hamas according to our plan and carrying out well-planned fort after fort to destroy Hamas’ military capabilities.”
“We have infantry, armor and combat engineers,” he said, referring to Hamas’ efforts to capture the underground infrastructure network of tunnels. Alaa Abu Hasera, a resident of Gaza City, said entire blocks of the area were reduced to rubble by the earthquake-like attack.
Israel launched a massive bombardment of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip after Palestinians launched the worst attack in Israel’s history. A surprise attack by Hamas on October 7 killed more than 1400 civilians. Besides, more than 240 people were taken hostage.
Gaza’s health ministry said Israeli strikes and intensified ground operations have killed more than 9,770 Palestinian civilians since the war began. Most of them are women and children.
