In protest against the arrest and remand of Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the National Standing Committee of BNP, a general hartal has been called in addition to the siege of Chittagong tomorrow Sunday.
Chittagong Metropolitan BNP, Chittagong North and South District have given this program. On behalf of these three organizations, Metropolitan BNP office secretary Mohammad Idris Ali gave this information in a press release on Saturday morning.
According to the statement, people from all walks of life in Chittagong are being called upon to participate in the hartal program to protest the arrest and torture of former parliamentarian and former minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury due to the one-sided demand for the resignation of the government in order to bring back democracy to the country. The leaders sought the cooperation of Chittagong Metropolitan, North and South District BNP and its affiliates at all levels and the people of Chittagong to make the hartal a peaceful success.
It is also said that this program will be fully implemented in Chittagong district and metropolis. However, ambulances, vehicles carrying newspapers and journalists, fire service vehicles will remain exempt from the strike, the statement said. Besides, the nationwide two-day blockade program called by BNP will continue on Sunday and Monday.
A member of the BNP standing committee in the case filed at the Paltan police station regarding the death of a policeman in a clash with the BNP in Fakirapool area of the capital. The court sent Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury to 6-day remand on Friday.
Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury was arrested from a house in Gulshan around 1 pm on Thursday.
On October 29, police sub-inspector Masuk Mia filed a murder case at Paltan Model Police Station in the capital. 164 people including top leaders of BNP have been accused in this case. Notable accused are – standing committee member Mirza Abbas, Ameer Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Zahir Uddin Swapan.
