On March 11, 2021, Awami League Member of Parliament from Sylhet-3 Constituency Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury Koyes died of Corona. After that, Awami League’s nominee Habibur Rahman won the by-election of this seat. There are seven more leaders of the party in the running for nomination in the upcoming 12th National Assembly elections. Local politicians said that many of those who are seeking nomination have made important contributions to Awami League. As a result, other nominees have become a ‘thorn in the neck’ of the current member of Parliament.
When contacted, current member of Parliament Habibur Rahman said, ‘Awami League is a big political party. Naturally there will be more number of aspirants. But after being elected, I have approved the work of many big projects. I have implemented many important projects. I have done a lot of work starting from construction of bridges, culverts, roads, parks, stadiums, still a lot of work is going on. So far I have fulfilled at least 90 percent of the election promises. Voters are also satisfied with my work.’
In Sylhet-3 constituency, along with the current member of parliament, three-time former organizational secretary of Central Awami League, Misbah Uddin, is being mentioned as a candidate.
Misbah Uddin said, ‘I am basically a party worker. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took me from the grassroots and gave me the important responsibility of the center several times. My position is in favor of whoever the party chooses.’
