Rajshahi obstetrician and gynecologist Fatema Siddika was taken to the police station for questioning.
On Friday around 7:15 pm, he was taken away by members of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police from his house in Bara Bangram area of the city.
Earlier, DB and Shah Makhdoom police entered the house around 5 pm. Police officials did not want to talk to the media when Fatima Siddiqa was taken to the police station in a car.
However, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Spokesperson and Special Branch Additional Deputy Commissioner Jamirul Islam said, “Dr. Fatema Siddiqa was not detained, taken to the police station for questioning. A decision will be taken later after the inquiry.”
Fatima Siddiqa is known as a supporter of Jamaat-e-Islami.
A police officer who was in the operation told reporters, “The operation was conducted on the news that the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami were sitting in the house. But no one was found at home. Nothing was seized from the house.”
Rajshahi Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami Shura Member Majedur Rahman said, “I have received information that Fatima Siddika has been taken away by the police. I can’t say why it was taken. He is one of us. They support us financially.”
Fatema Siddiqa is one of the few doctors who are renowned as obstetricians and gynecologists in Rajshahi. He owns a hospital called Motherland Infertility Center.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested Rajshahi Deputy Tax Commissioner Mahibul Islam Bhuiyan red-handed while accepting a bribe of Tk 10 lakh from this doctor on April 4. He is still in prison.
On September 7, the police raided the house of Fatema Siddiqa. Nazmus Saqib (28), son of Fatema Siddika, was arrested on charges of anti-social activities at home. A young woman was also arrested with him. Narcotics were also seized from the house that day.
