A Chhatra Dal activist was arrested by the police after breaking a cocktail and vandalizing a car during the jhatika procession in Chittagong amid the BNP-Jamaat blockade.
He was arrested from Atmasing intersection near Kotwali Kadmatoli in the city on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said that the arrested Touhidul Islam (28) is a member of Kotwali Thana Chhatra Dal.
Assistant Commissioner of City Police (Kotwali Zone) Atanu Chakraborty told bdnews24.com that 10/12 youths took out a jhatika procession and vandalized a minibus at Atmasing intersection around 1 am. They also crack two cocktails there.
At that time, the police chased and arrested Touhiddul, but the others escaped. Later, a cocktail and two petrol bombs were recovered by searching the area.
On the second day of the blockade on Wednesday, passenger and bus traffic increased on the internal routes of Chittagong. However, the number of passengers is relatively less. And despite the announcement, the long-distance bus was not seen leaving.
A bus was set on fire on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway in the Vellapara Bridge area of Karnaphuli police station in the morning. Garment workers were being taken to the workplace in that bus. No one was injured in this incident.
According to the police, the bus was going towards Patiya with workers. The besiegers attacked the Vellapara Bridge area. When they started vandalizing with sticks, the passengers in the bus got down. Then they set fire.
The blockade of BNP and Jamaat is going on demanding the re-establishment of the caretaker government during the election period, the resignation of the government and the release of the arrested party leaders and workers. The three-day blockade will end on Thursday.
