The police arrested 11 leaders and workers of BNP including the central organizing secretary and former MP Bilkis Jahan Shirin.
Apart from Shirin, Barisal District South convener and former MP Abul Hossain Khan, Barisal Metropolitan BNP convener Moniruzzaman Farooq and joint convener Advocate Ali Haider Babul are among those arrested.
Barisal Kotwali Model Police Station OC Anwar Hossain said that they were arrested from different areas including Chaumatha of Barisal city at different times of Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
In support of the blockade, Chhatra Dal held a protest march in the city’s Band Road Sherebangla Medical College Hospital area in the morning. At the end of the procession, they set fire to tires and chanted slogans in favor of the blockade and the resignation of the current government.
On the second day of the blockade, some buses left the two bus terminals of Barisal on domestic and long-distance routes. However, due to passenger shortage, many buses cancel their journeys. The same thing happened in the launch service of domestic routes. Although there was no restriction on the launch and bus movement, there was an extreme passenger shortage in both modes of transport.
A large number of police are deployed in important areas including the bus terminal and launch ghat of the city. RAB and BGB are patrolling the road. No untoward incident has been reported till the time of writing this report.
