Symbols have been allocated among the four mayoral candidates participating in the Khulna City Corporation elections. This Friday morning at 9:30 returning officer. Alauddin distributed symbols among the candidates in his conference room.
The official campaigning of the candidates will start from now ahead of the June 12 election.
According to the office of the returning officer, 7 people submitted nomination papers for the post of mayor, 156 people for the post of councilor of 31 wards and 39 people for the post of councilor of 10 reserved wards. Among them, the returning officer canceled the nomination papers of 4 people for the post of mayor, 12 people for the post of general councilor and 2 people for the post of reserved councilor after verifying the nomination papers on May 18. However, on appeal, one mayor, four general councilors and two reserved councilors got their nomination papers back.
Khulna City Corporation Election Returning Officer Md. Alauddin said, ‘A total of 12 councilor candidates have withdrawn their nomination papers. As a result, 179 people are currently in competition. Among them, 4 candidates will compete for the post of mayor, 39 candidates for the post of reserved councilor and 136 candidates for the post of general ward councilor.

He further said, ‘Voting will be done through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). CCTV cameras will be installed in 289 centers and 1 thousand 732 polling booths to ensure fair environment. The Election Commission will monitor them all the time. If there is any disturbance, immediate action will be taken.’
It is known that the total number of voters in Khulna City Corporation elections this time is 5 lakh 35 thousand 529 people. Among them, the number of male voters is 2 lakh 68 thousand 833 and the number of female voters is 2 lakh 66 thousand 696. Voting will be held in 289 centers in this election. The Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) has identified 128 polling stations as normal and 161 as vulnerable out of 289 polling stations in KCC.

According to KMP, there will be extra security measures in high-risk centers compared to normal centers. 3 thousand 567 police, 300 armed police and 4 thousand 657 Ansar members will be responsible for the security of the polling station. In the meantime, 16 check posts have been installed in the city. A control room is being opened in KMP office. Besides, BGB and RAB members will perform round-the-clock duty on election day. 10 judicial magistrates have been appointed on the occasion of election. They will be on duty from 10 to 14 June.
