Four candidates contesting for the post of mayor in the Khulna City Corporation elections have received symbols. They took the symbol from the returning officer’s office at 9:30 am on Friday. After that they started official campaign.
Talukdar Abdul Khalek, the candidate nominated by Awami League with the boat symbol, is contesting for the post of mayor in this election, and the candidate nominated by the Islamic movement with the hatpakha symbol. Abdul Awal, Jatiya Party nominated candidate SM Shafiqul Islam with plow symbol and Zaker Party nominated candidate SM Sabbir Hossain with rose flower symbol. In this election, 179 people including four mayoral candidates are competing in the polling field.
After the allocation of symbols, Awami League’s nominated candidate Talukdar Abdul Khalek said that the people will vote for the candidate with the boat symbol to strengthen the hand of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The people of the city have witnessed the development that Sheikh Hasina’s government has made in Khulna in the past. After that he started campaigning from Newmarket area of the city.
Jatiya Party candidate Shafiqul Islam Madhu said that people will vote for the candidate of Jatiya Party to make Khulna city a balanced development and drug-free city based on ward.
As of Thursday afternoon, no candidate has withdrawn nomination papers for the posts of mayor and reserved councillors. However, 12 candidates for the post of general councilor withdrew their nomination papers. Apart from this, there are 136 candidates for councilor posts in 31 general wards and 39 candidates for councilor posts in 10 reserved wards.
