A dream of Bangladeshi living in New York came true on the great Independence Day. A plaque named ‘Bangladesh Street’ was unveiled at 73 Street in Jackson Heights, a Bangladeshi-dominated area, on Sunday (March 26) noon local time on Bangladesh’s 53rd Independence and National Day.
Of course, Jackson Heights is well known to expats, and even to those visiting New York from the country. This area is the haunt of expatriate Bangladeshis. And 73rd Street and 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights is its main focal point. This street was named ‘Bangladesh Street’.
When mainstream American politicians and public representatives unveiled the ‘Bangladesh Street’ plaque, the entire area erupted in ‘Jaya Bangla’ slogans.

Shekhar Krishnan, the newly elected city council member of Jackson Heights and Elmhurst area, unveiled the nameplate of Bangladesh Street. Jackson Heights Bangladeshi Business Association (JBBA) former and current officials including leaders of various political and social organizations were present on the occasion. Hundreds of Bangladeshis including Congress member Grace Meng, Assembly member Catalina Cruz, JBBA leader Ghiyas Ahmed, Haroon Bhuiyan, Fahad Solaiman, Tarek Hasan Khan were present at the unveiling ceremony of the name plaque of Bangladesh Street.

In view of the long-standing demand of Bangladeshi expatriates in New York, the decision to name ‘Bangladesh Street’ was taken at the city council meeting on February 16, and later it was passed by 47-0 votes. Since then, 73rd Street in Jackson Heights has been renamed ‘Bangladesh Street’. The decision number of the bill is INT 897.
In July last year, the former and current officials of the Jackson Heights Bangladeshi Business Association (JBBA). JBBA’s current president Harun Bhuiyan and general secretary Fahad Solaiman sent the proposal to New York City officials. The concerned council members tried to pass the proposal on their insistence.
