The body of light that dispels the darkness of the world is called the Sun. The light that removes the darkness of human mind is called book. Just what? There is no good, no light in the world – that does not come from books. Today is World Book Day. In 1995, UNESCO celebrated World Book Day for the first time. Since then, every year in different countries of the world, April 23 is being celebrated as World Book Day. In our country too, the day is celebrated through various readers and writers organizations and various libraries. Nowadays, in the age of internet, smartphones and technology, all people, especially the new generation, are moving away from reading books. As a result, the next generation is growing up without knowledge. Only books can save you from this situation. Therefore, in the current context, the importance of celebrating Book Day is immense.

Many of us have a misconception about books that I don’t read books, so why should I buy them? That is, since you don’t read books, you don’t want to waste money buying books. But you know what? This is a misconception of yours. In fact, you don’t read books because you don’t buy books. Suppose – you have a few books on your office table, on your home shelf, near your bed. No matter how illiterate you are. If you have books around, sometime you just turn the pages of the books and read some parts from there. By reading this, one day you will develop the habit of reading books. In fact, we don’t read books, we don’t get the opportunity to read because we don’t have books at hand and that’s why we don’t develop the habit of reading books.

It is also our wrong idea to read the book only after buying the book. You don’t read books, or you don’t know how to read and write, what happened? Buy some books and keep them on your office table, shelf, home table, bedside. By doing this, if you do not develop this habit of reading, seeing these books can develop the habit of reading books among other members of your family. Moreover, if you have a guest at your home or office, there may be someone who loves to read books. For them though some books are a must have in your collection. Moreover, collecting books is an indicator of the beauty and personality of your mind. On your reading table, even if not read, you have some books in your collection – it adds to your personality and nobility. Visitors have a positive impression of you. So even if you don’t read the book, you should buy the book. You should keep the book next to your hand.

Pramath Chowdhury, a famous essayist on reading books, said in his book reading article, ‘It is the reader’s mistake to buy a book and read it. Writing books should not be a hobby, but buying books should be nothing more than a hobby.’ The famous American writer and journalist Ernest Hemingway said “There is no friend so faithful as a book.”

We complain about our boys and girls that they don’t read books, they spend all their time with sports, especially mobiles and TV. If I ask you, how many days, how many books have you bought your son or daughter? The answer will show you are saying no. In other words, you are blaming the children instead of giving them an alternative. Is this correct? Irish poet and novelist Oscar Wilde said – What a man will be in the future can be understood by nothing else but by the type of books he reads. If you don’t let your children read books, how do you know what they want to be in the future. Remember that there are some books in the house, it spreads a different kind of light in that family. This family is different from eight to ten families in the society.

You can ask so many thousands of books. Which book will you buy? The answer is that if possible you buy books selectively. Choose books based on your interests, the interests of family members or the interests of visiting readers. And if it is not possible to choose a book, then buy the book that you will find in front of your eyes, the book of the author that you will find. Because there is nothing more beautiful, sacred and necessary in the world than books. Canadian-American writer Vincent Sterrett said “When we collect books, we collect joy.” So whether we read books or not, we all buy books. Let each of us have a book on our shopping list every month. Let each of us have a small library in our home. Ending with Syed Mujtaba Ali’s famous quote about books, he said- ‘No one goes bankrupt by buying books’. So let’s buy books, read books, let books be our daily companion.
